A LITTLE GUIDANCE. BETTER FEEDBACK.

How to playtest.

Eight simple steps from your first launch to feedback a game creator can actually use.

STEP 3 OF 8

Play like a new player

Notice your first reactions, then explore.

Start without a walkthrough unless the brief asks otherwise. Your first reaction is valuable: record what you thought the game wanted you to do before you learn its systems.

  • Follow the requested route or task for the full requested play time.
  • Note moments of delight, hesitation, surprise, boredom, or frustration. Add a time or location so the creator can find them.
  • If recording, say what you are trying, what you expect, and what surprises you. Explain your thinking instead of narrating every button press.
  • After your first attempt, revisit confusing parts. Try to repeat a bug and distinguish a consistent issue from something you saw once.

If you get stuck: write down the goal, what you tried, and what stopped you. If a crash or blocker prevents completion, contact the creator through the agreed channel or Firstplay support; do not claim you completed work you could not do.

Put it into practice.

Explore funded playtests with open spots. Read the brief and get accepted before starting.
